The Preferences menu is reached from the Options Menu and provides a number of panels that change Connection Profile and LDAP default settings, GUI and LDAPviewer settings and Debug and Diagnostic setting.
Clicking this button will apply all changes made using any panel. Further changes may be made or the Cancel button used to dismiss the window.

This panel changes the default settings used in Connection Profiles (and Quick Connect). Each control is described (top to bottom, left to right) in the following sections:

This panel changes the behavior and appearance of LDAPviewer and each control is described (top to bottom, left to right) in the following sections:
The Look and Feel of LDAPviewer is initially set to the system default for the platform on which it is running. Depending on the platform a number of alternative Look and Feel option are available as shown in the drop-down menu (illustrated drop-down is for the Windows platform):
Selecting one of the available choices followed by the Apply button will change LDAPviewer's Look and Feel.

Changes the number of number of Entry editors used by LDAPviewer. Select from the available drop-down menu as required. System default is Both (HTML and Table).
This panel allows control over the debugging and diagnostic features provided by LDAPviewer and each control is described (top to bottom, left to right) in the following sections:
Changes the type of messages that LDAPviewer outputs to either the console or the Log File. Select from the available drop-down menu as required (Trace generates the maximum diagnostics and includes Fine and Finest levels). System default is Warning.
Note: LDAPviewer logs progress and error messages to the java console which is disabled by default. If, however, LDAPviewer fails to load (fails to display its initial window) then console messages provide essential diagnostics. To run LDAPviewer with the console enabled:
For Windows:
Open Windows explorer and navigate to the LDAPviewer installation directory (normally C:\Program Files (x86)\LV) and double click the file named lv-console.cmd which which will run LDAPviewer from a command window and display all console output. To copy relevant messages from the command window::
a. In Windows 10: Right click the window bar and select Properties, ensure that "Enable Ctrl key shortcuts" is enabled (you may need to uncheck "Use legacy console"). Dismiss the properties window. Select all required text in the command window and use Ctrl + C to copy to the clipboard. Paste to a suitable application.
By default LDAPviewer limits all user prompt messages to critical messages or those which are recoverable by user intervention. All other messages (including unrecoverable errors in Red) are output to the Status and Error Information line. Checking this box will cause a user prompt message to be output every time LDAPviewer outputs a status line message. System default is not to prompt errors (unchecked).
When debugging TLS connections Java can provide voluminous diagnostic information. Checking this box will turn on Java's diagnostic feature. This is output to Standard Out which is not enabled by default (see Console Logging or Log to File). System default is not to invoke TLS Trace (unchecked).
By default LDAPviewer runs without a console. A Console and Standard Out may be turned on using the procedure defined at Console Logging. Alternatively both Console and Standard Out may be directed to a log file by checking this box. The default log file is:
Windows Location:
C:\Users\user-name\AppData\Roaming\LV\config\LV.log.
Linux and BSD:
/home/user-name/LV/config/LV.log.
Note: Turning on this feature will divert Standard Out (STDOut) for any Java application running in the User's system and should be used with caution.
System default is not to Log to File (unchecked).
